Crushing Myths

Who are the Mythbusters? Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman - between them they have over 30 years of special effects experience. And we also didn’t get them to do an episode. We tried to pool money together for hiring them, but 7,20€ and 400,000 Zimbabwean dollars weren’t enough for the greedy bastards.

If you didn’t guess yet, this article is going to be focused on WoW end-game raiding, Paragon as a guild and other stuff that for most random forum folk seem to be surrounded in a mystery wrapped in an enigma, evading all attempts to get tackled by common sense.

At first it was just hilarious reading some trolls going off with stuff like “whole Paragon is on EU welfare checks and raid 30 hours a day and will never get laid LOL.” Then it just became more hilarious when stuff like that was passed on as factual insider information. We felt it’s time to correct some of these conceptions. (Besides there’s some substantial circumstantial evidence through dirty MSN logs that Deva once hooked up with an actual, real girl. So technically we're not all virgins, FYI.)

So, without further rambling, let’s get to it:

Myth:

 - Paragon has a whole alt guild filled with warlocks who SS their main raid (and everyone is required to have one!)

Semi-true

We didn’t have an alt guild, nor was it required to have an alt lock. We did use alt locks to soulstone some players in our raid. Difference between us and most other competitive guilds with clue was that we weren’t even trying to cover it up – you can still probably find the posts by yours truly addressing this very issue after PTR testing.

Myth:

 - Paragon has four (!!!) mirror alt raids to test the limited boss attempts with!

False.

We have an “alt raid” going at the moment, but we have no-one playing same class as their main. Playing carbon copy raids would a) be incredibly boring, b) melt our collective face, c) be horrible, d) burn everyone out real quick. Playing another class (for me) has been quite refreshing to be honest – it’s an added bonus that we can use it to our advantage in other ways.

For more detailed information on who plays what alts, you can check this nice chart right here made by Diivil.

Myth:

 - All of the players in hardcore raiding guilds are unemployed/have no life and play the game 24/7 like robots!!

False.

And downright stupid too, to be honest. Personally the time I’m spending in-game (read: in raids, I rarely play otherwise) has gone down drastically whenever the level of the guild has gone up. There’s a limited amount of stuff to kill in raids. The better you are, the faster bosses die, the quicker you can go back to playing Second Life dreading the day you get visited by Ralph and be made interweb laughing stock.

Here’s an easy example. Back in ToC, we farmed content as follows: ~4x10-man HC, 4x25-man, 2x25-man HC and it took us two nights a week, about 2-3h per night. Hardcore? I think not - several "casual" guilds that I know of spent more time in ToC.

On new content, most of us can quite easily get a few days off of work/school – only a couple of us are unemployed (as far as I know). These few days, most of the time, are enough to clear majority of the easy content in any given instance. Taking a few days off is definitely more “hardcore,” but really, what else were you gonna spend a few vacation days on than doing something you like?

Myth:

- Paragon members get paid to play!!!

False.

It’s the other way around. We actually have to pay to play, just like rest of the players. If someone knows how to Sovietize this situation, please let me know – I’d love to get paid to play this game.

Myth:

 - Paragon has a GM/Dev playing in their guild feeding them info!!

False.

Surprisingly enough, we don’t have any GMs or Devs whispering in our ears what to do, nor do we have them playing in our guild. I did once play in a top-100’ish (progress wise) guild that had one in it. But to be honest it seems like their hands are extremely tied even if (and that’s a BIG if) they would want to share something.

Myth:

- I heard that Zyn knows what happened in Britannia – is this true?

True.

However, despite many inquiries about the matter (even by government officials), he remains uncooperative. Next step, I hear, is to send Jack Bauer in to dig up the info. "Eris" and rest of the 420 crew seem to have vanished and were nowhere to be found for comments.

Myth:

 - Taiwanese and Korean guilds are by far superior, because they get their content patches a month later yet their kills are only a few weeks after US/EU!

False.

They might be superior in some other ways (such as in dressing up for Starcraft tournaments), but it’s definitely not the case progress-wise. They get their patch one day later than EU. The difference is the same as between US and EU servers – it’s highly unlikely to be able to score any first kills on easy bosses (same with EU servers), but it definitely wouldn’t have been impossible to score first kills on the wing bosses in ICC for example.

Myth:

 - I heard that Liha uses a special death knight rotation and that Baltha has an awesome mage DPS spreadsheet, is this true?

True.

Definitely. Go make a character on EU-Lightning’s Blade and message them about it, they’ll be glad to help. Also, a free tip: make a level 55 death knight, as they might have addons that ignore level 1 characters automatically. Even if they insist that it's not true, that it's a prank played by someone etc, they're just lying. They'll reward your persistence by handing the secrets out if you keep messaging them for about a week straight.

Myth:

 - Is Paragon a "Finnish only" guild?

Semi-true.

Well, no, we aren't a Finnish only guild, but absolute mastery of the language is required. So if you live abroad but still speak Finnish, feel free to apply if you got what it takes. For some reason, this gets asked surprisingly much.

Myth:

- I heard that you already used up your attempts, have 20 attempts left, killed Lich King on heroic, fought Bolvar in phase 4, disbanded, merged with Ensidia and re-rolled to play Aion?

True.
