This was actually suggested on forums discussing gearscore since it's actually a decent idea, but i guess the addon devs can't be bothered or something.

Interestingly enough the addon has (had?) some code that looked like it was trying to do something roughly like this, but it isn't used anywhere (I think, the code was kind of messy and hard to follow).

Kruf wrote:Interestingly enough it wouldn't actually be that hard to make it somewhat more meaningful - just make it count the stats instead of ilevel and assign some rough stat values for each class/spec (there aren't that many out there really, when you only need rough values) and you'd have a tool to get a very rough idea of someone's gear potential.
This is true.

Also, what kenshin said is true. Many good feedbacks have been sent but we haven't seend things like this implemented in the addon. It seems the devs don't have the time or interesting of making this kind of complex change to the addon.
What you can do since a few versions is type "/gs" while selecting a player and you're going to see more info on their equipment, more numbers and experience of the player in various fights without having to use "compare achievements" or checking the wowarmory.
But the GS number itself should be more reliable, considering you're trying to save the time of fully analyzing the player before making a group for something.

Yeah it would really help the pugs to manage decent runs, however it will also screw over the clueless people since they wont get groups :(

From my point of view that isn't such a bad thing. Yes, perhaps I'm elitist, but is it really too much asked that people would spend 15 minutes checking out some basic theorycrafting on their class so they at least know what stats are good and such?

No it isn't, since there is one theory you go by in life in general and that is that everyone is an idiot until proven otherwise. I was pretending to care but i guess that backfired :)

Gotta admit that gearscore has helped me a lot with putting up my weekly ICC runs. If people admit to have less than 5900, I can tell them straight "sorry but we are looking for a bit better geared people". If they _say_ they got more I'll check their armory.
On the other had I've never had the addon nor do I know my own gearscore or Sejta's or Lazei's or Baltha's or Verdisha's... well you got the picture.

Well sure, it gives you a rough estimate but you still have to check their gear cause alot of people use pvp gear and stuff just like you said and alot of other people might have the gear but are completely clueless in how to enchant and gem so you can easily assume that those people despite having the gear will perform under what's expected. For it to be somewhat useful imo, they would have to do what Kruf said and somehow make it dependant on gems/enchants/specc/class. But maybe that's to much work to code i have no idea.
