Now that my mage has moved out of the t11 into a mix of firelands reg/heroic gear, I've been toying around with the "healer" meta. Basically it boils down to 3% crit dmg & 20 int VS +2% Max Mana(~2500 mana in my gear, raid buffed). It appears that I am gaining dps but I know I also have been getting upgrades. Has anyone else thought/tried this or am I being a noob? Here is my character to reference, http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/uldaman/Deptdint/advanced

Deptdint,

The 3% increased crit damage is better. The increased mana is good, but just not as good. Run a Simulationcraft test on it if your not sure.

I did, ran it 3 times(in my gear) for each and these were the results.

Burning :
Patchwerk = 32472.5, 32537.9, 32497.2 ( 32502.5 average )
HelterSkelter = 24338.3, 24349.4, 24362.8 ( 24350.1 average )

Ember:
Patchwerk = 32811.0, 32806.3, 32818.2 ( 32811.9 average )
HelterSkelter = 24585.0, 24612.5, 24614.9 ( 24604.1 average )

So on average, the patchwerk mode is a 309.4 dps difference and the helterSkelter mode is a 254. This is why I asked, the sim was much closer then I would have guessed. I've not used the sim often nor do I know how accurate it is with Cata content but I would assume the numbers being so close would give merit to consider Ember as a viable option.

In regards to the nature of Arcane, we are doing 0 dps(outside of arcane barage) when we have to move and there is no benefit from Burning. If we are moving with Ember socked, we still are doing the same 0 dps but we are at least gaining more mana and more value out of our mastery. My theory is that with Ember you have more mana which gives you more value out of mastery and allows you to cast more Arcane Blasts at 4 stacks and thus makes up fr the 3% crit damage.

Deptdint,

When talking in terms of of dps anything that provides an increase at all is important. For instance if you have the ability to change your reforging from 2 over hit cap to hit cap exactly with no decrease in other stat's you should do it. When talking in terms of simulationcraft and wow there is an element of chance involved which is why we run multiple tests. Generally anything that gives you an increase of 100 or a decrease of 100 is significant. By significant I mean that it's not because of RNG (chance), but it was a result of the change you made. You said your damage showed 300 higher. That is a lot. That is very significant. The one that was 300 higher is clearly, the better one.

I just want to point out how significant 300 dps is from one gem. If you were to upgrade a 359 boots to 378 boots that would be about a dps gain of 300. Your doing that with a gem. One item. I can't even begin to describe how much of an impact that has. It's a lot of little increases that add up to big ones.

Just keep in mind anything that changes by 100 is significant.
