Holy Trinkets - is spell power viable ?

Hi,

My guild is actually running with only one holy paladin who plays holy as an off-spec, I don't play a holy paladin myself except occasionally on alt / pug runs. This paladin is insisting on using Althar's abaccus 277, saying that the 201 spell power is optimal for high end fights like arthas 25 hm and that the proc helps a huge deal in keeping tanks up.

I have never been a big fan of random procs when it comes to healing since they are highly unreliable and from what I have heard, going for spell power as a holy paladin is a viable option for toons that just started gearing up but not for a full 264/277 geared toon that should focus on Haste to increase his throughput. Also holy paladins are supposed to overheal much, it's kind of the way their gameplay works I guess, the ICC buff has made them overheal even more and adding spell-power to their gear would seems to make the whole thing even worse.

Could someone tell me if my logic is off on this and explain to me what I'm missing. I'm at a loss here.

Finally, if spell-power is the way to go, wouldn't it make more sense to use one of the other spell-power trinkets which provide mana regeneration too ? Solace or the Frost Emblems one ?

No, the proc has an ICD and any good paladin would look at their logs and see that it procs maybe three times an average fight. It is bad and regen would give you more output.

You are amazingly right. Spoken like a true HPally.

Our BiS trinkets are Solace HM / Meteorite Crystal, but now a days its just as effective to go double Solace. But those three are our BiS trinkets, and let your pally know most of us would probably choose the 245 badge and the 264 badge trinkets over Althor's.
